In recent years, a trend that swept the mountain bike world was the 27.5 + wheel on hardtail mountain bikes. This wheel size promised better comfort and grip, with riders able to run lower air pressure on the tires and getting a pneumatic rear suspension from tire flex. For rider who wanted a fun bike to play but thought standard hardtails were too rough and uncomfortable, the 27.5 + was a breath of fresh air. Now, with the newly released for 2020 Polygon Diablo 29+, you can have those same benefits on a wide tire 29er hardtail mountain bike. The benefits of the larger wheels are well known by now, such as ability to maintain speed, extra comfort and better grip. With a wider 2.6 inch tire, the Polygon Diablo offers an option to riders who like the idea of the 27.5+ but would prefer something that rolls better and is able to reach higher speeds. The bigger tires and the 120mm suspension fork also allow the Diablo to easily handle technical trails normally requiring a dual suspension setup.
The Diablo is built around Polygon’s trail ready ALX Boost alloy frame, an efficient aluminum design that combines durability and performance with the new BOOST system (hub system originally developed by SRAM – 12x148mm rear, 15x110mm front). With wider Boost hub flanges, it allows the spokes on the wheelset to make a wider triangle which results in more support for the rim and a stronger overall wheel. Compared to a regular hardtail mountain bike which is normally designed for XC riding, the slacker head angle combined with the shorter chainstays allow the bike to be ridden in more vertical environments. Along with the inherent cushion of the oversized wheels and tires, a Rockshox Revelation RC front suspension fork with 120mm of travel and hydraulic lockout helps soak up the big hits.
The Diablo’s drivetrain combines a 1 x 11 Shimano Deore XT drivetrain with a Race Face Ride Crankset running a Narrow-Wide 34T chainring and a 11-46T cassette from SunRace. Shifting is supported with Shimano SLX triggers and Shimano’s M615 hydraulic disc brakes take care of the stopping power providing excellent modulation in all conditions. A Tranz-X 125mm Dropper seatpost with remote lever on the handlebars allows you to fine tune saddle height effortlessly on the fly. The Diablo rolls on a set of Entity Boost 29+ wheels wrapped in WTB Trail Boss Comp 29″ x 2.6″ (front) tires and 2.4″ (rear) tires that are tubeless ready.
The Diablo is finished with Entity Xpert stem, saddle, and handlebar, all of which balance weight savings with the kind of durability mountain biking demands. When all is said and done, this is a fun bike. Whether you are a newcomer to mountain biking or an experienced rider looking to get more out of your ride, the Diablo 29+ trail bike can ride faster with more control, climb steeper sections with better traction and negotiate trickier descents with more forgiveness. This is one rad arrow to add to your stable of mountain bikes.
*tires and wheels are not tubeless ready; customers will need to purchase tires, valves, tape and sealant to convert
